Note: At the moment I'm looking forward to going to Florence in April '05. Good pointers on what to see and do there are appreciated...
Hi!
In the spring of 2003, I had another one of those trips around the world. I hope I'll get the time to make a decent webpage about the trip one day, but in the mean time, this will do... My goals were to:
seeing beautiful places (I like beaches, art museums etc)
staying in French-speaking areas (to try to learn a bit more French)
visiting some schools to get some idea of what the school systems are like in other countries
meet nice people (travelling alone and not talk to anyone is boring...)
I have to say that these goals were met. Here are a short summary:
I travelled from Alta, via Oslo and Munich, to
Johannesburg, South Africa. Here I visited the teacher education at the University of the Witwatersrand, which was very interesting. I also went on a guided tour of Soweto, and visited the Apartheid Museum... I went on to
Reunion, a beautiful little French island east of Madagaskar. I spent about a week there, enjoying the sun. But I also visited the teacher education in St. Denis.
Then I went on to
Singapore. I only spent a few days, but they were wonderful. I visited both a primary school and the teacher education. I also went to a museum, a zoo, to Chinatown and Little India and so on, and spent some time with a very nice local, with whom I discussed Iranian movies. Then I travelled on to
Sydney, Australia - where I enjoyed the end of Mardi Gras, before I saw some of the important sights. I didn't like Sydney as much as I expected, but I know that Australia is more than the backpacker district of Sydney... After half a week, I went on to
New Zealand, where I travelled around for about three weeks. I visited a friend in Dunedin, then travelled north. One of the highlights of the entire round-the-world-trip was the Maori experience in Rotorua. I'll have to say more about that in a later version of this page... Then I went on to
Papeete, Tahiti. Teacher education, two schools, beaches, sun... A wonderful week and a half... While on Tahiti and Moorea I also had no less than two job interviews for jobs back in Norway (on the phone, of course). I got one of them. To get back home, I had to go via the USA, so I enjoyed a few days in
Los Angeles, USA. I went to Universal Studios, as well as studying mathematics lessons at The Lesson Lab. I also looked at art in a museum. My last stop was
Montreal, Canada. The highlight here (except being asked, via email, to be a friend's Best Man), was a baseball game in the Olympic Stadium. Then I went back home (via London and Oslo).
